If you do a quick internet search, you will find a thousand and one ways to boost your self-esteem. This is because there is an understanding today that most human problems are due to low self-esteem.
Because of this, we have seen the world create a cult around the elevation of what people think and feel about themselves, the cult of self. The problem is that this has been done in a way that “feeling good” has become the excuse for many things, such as cluttered consumption, expensive leisure, endless aesthetic treatments, plastics, frantic entertainment, getting out of one relationship and getting into another, demanding to be treated like this or that.
Even pouring out insults on others in the name of being good about yourself is considered acceptable, because, after all, if all this makes you happy, that’s all that matters!
So self-esteem survey marketing drives many follow-ups, but mostly trade. The same products that are so widespread as promoters of happiness, have no permanent power of satisfaction, thus obliging the dizzying consumption.
Today, people spend exorbitant sums to get something, but they feel good for a short time and then need another and another. There are people who no longer know what to do to feel good, because all the proposals offered by this world have already been tried and nothing has satisfied in a lasting way.
However, I want to say that this self-esteem that depends on things and people is misleading and vulnerable because it leaves the human being in the hands of others. After all, who hasn’t heard anyone say they were feeling rubbish because they were ignored or forgotten by a particular friend? How can your physical, emotional and spiritual state depend on the goodwill of others?
When we are born of God, there is no problem of self-esteem, for the Holy Spirit transforms our identity and our worth. Therefore, we do not go back and forth, which is sometimes well and sometimes bad. We are not hurt by the way we are treated, let alone with a superego, because we are accomplished in some situation.
Being a child of God makes us find a secure and unshakable position, which also brings unparalleled inner satisfaction. If we are honored we say “Amen!”, If we are despised, we also say “Amen!” Because our value does not come from what others do or think about us.
We need to reach maturity so as not to delegate to anyone the power to make us feel good or bad. For after all, no person has an obligation to raise my self-esteem. Neither the spouse nor the pastor, the friend or the boss. Everyone must have their own sense of self-worth within so that no matter what they do or fail to do, we will continue to be who we are.
Paul understood this matter well, so he said that it didn’t matter what people thought of him. In fact, the apostle said that he did not even pay attention to what he himself thought or felt. What a greatness of faith!
It’s not what I feel that counts, but who I am to God. That is the reason for happiness that no one and nothing has the power to take away.
Yet very little is given me to be judged by you, or by any human judgment; neither do I judge myself either. 1 Corinthians 4: 3
Given this, are you still worried about “feeling good”?
