Help Save a Life

Blood Drive

The Universal Church in Houston, Texas is partnering with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center (giveblood.org) to help the community of Houston. During these uncertain times, there has been a great shortage of blood in the United States.

Blood donors are very important because they help save a life. The blood that is donated can be used in different situations such as organ transplants, complicated surgeries, and severe trauma cases. Here’s some interesting blood facts you should know about:

  1. 4.5 million Americans will a need blood transfusion each year.
  2. Someone needs blood every two seconds.
  3. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.
  4. One unit of blood can be separated into several components: red blood cells, plasma, plateletsand cryoprecipitate.
  5. Children being treated for cancer, premature infants and children having heart surgery needblood and platelets from donors of all types, especially type O.
  6. Cancer, transplant and trauma patients, and patients undergoing open-heart surgery may requireplatelet transfusions to survive.
  7. The number one reason blood donors say they give is because they “want to help others.”
  8. If only one more percent of all Americans would give blood, blood shortages would disappear forthe foreseeable future.
  9. After donating blood, you replace the fluid in hours and the red blood cells within four weeks. Ittakes eight weeks to restore the iron lost after donating.

Blood drives hosted by companies, schools, places of worship and civic organizations supply

  1. roughly half of all blood donations across the U.S.

Hospitals are having to go the extra mile to look for blood, in order to help save their patients. According to the Red Cross, they have distributed 75,000 blood products that is decreasing the nation’s blood supply. Hospitals are needing all types of blood, mainly type O, everyone can donate regardless of the persons’ situation (Severe Blood Shortage).

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has five programs; High School Donors, Capital Life Force, Education and Commit for Life that helps people in the Texas Gulf Coast region. Thousands of donations are needed everyday in the Texas Gulf Coast.
