Life was stressful, I did not know my real parents.
I was adopted and my foster mother passed away, so I lived from house to house. I kept to myself and never wanted to approach people or trust anyone.
I couldn’t get a job because I was addicted to weed. It seemed to me that smoking made me feel at peace in difficult times, but it was an illusion. I used to pretend to be happy and hide deep pain inside me.
It took me a while to get to the YPG. I was facing a lot of problems, however, I realized that when I started participating in YPG Connections, things started to get better and I started to open up. Being part of the YPG, I gained confidence, learned to value myself and not worry about what other people think of me.
I don’t need to smoke or drink anymore. I am happier to have a job and pushing everyday to improve myself. – Shaniqua, New York
