Drug Overdose in America: The Not So Silent Killer

The number of deaths from drug overdoses in the United States has broken a record. While the United States has directed efforts to contain the current pandemic. According to the US Department of health, there were 81,200 deaths from overdoses in one year. The highest number ever recorded in the country.

The data were collected between June 2019 and May 2002. In relation to the previous twelve months, there was an increase of 18.2%. The most used drugs are prenatal (Synthetic opioids whose consumption is growing more and more in the USA), methamphetamine and cocaine.

According to the authorities, “The increase in drug overdose deaths appears to have been accelerated by the pandemic”. Since “the largest increase was recorded from March to May 2020, coinciding with the implementation of comprehensive mitigation of the pandemic.”

According to Bishop Renato Cardoso, this is s result that could be predicted:

‘It is not necessary to think much to understand the relationship between the increase in addictions and overdoses. The stress caused by the pandemic and related measures, such as lockdown, quarantine, job loss. Because addiction is an escape. When a person is stressed he runs into his addiction. This is natural, it is normal for the addict.”
